Golfers make up about 15 percent of a given population, but the golf industry impacts 100 percent of us. However, the importance of what golf brings to society is often lost in the shuffle when it is thought about as “just a game.” Here’s how it makes an impact, and why it is important to preserve “the game” when faced with economic and environmental challenges.
“Golf has a huge economic impact on Nevada, from jobs to vendors to suppliers throughout the industry, in addition to its connection to hospitality,” said Thom Blinkinsop, President of the Silver State Golf Industry Alliance. “Golf is connected to a lot of different areas and creates significant economic activity throughout the community.”
The Silver State Golf Industry Alliance recently held a benefit tournament at Southern Highlands Golf Club to continue its mission “to provide one voice for the future of golf in Nevada.”
“Golf is an essential part of the valley, and it is important to understand how essential green spaces are to cool the air, provide valuable photosynthesis, and contribute beneficial enhancements to our environment,” said James Symons, Director of Agronomy, Anthem Country Club. “As the population continues to grow and thrive, green spaces have never been more important.”
The “Heat Island” effect is a real things, and golf courses offer a defense to that emerging reality. The continued assault on golf course water budgets–even though golf courses are intricate stewards of water management–continues to put pressure on the cost of doing business and event, at times, staying in business. Golf rates, availability, and the overall industry is being impacted.
There are many reasons to help protect the game and ways to do it. Be sure your politicians understand that golf is MORE than just a game.
